FIDE is the governing world organization of chess. It organizes world championship competitions, draws up rules of the game, awards the titles of International Grandmaster, International Master, International Woman Master, International Chess Judge etc. It was founded in 1924. Until 1946 the current world champion chose his opponent when defending his title. Since 1946, the year the Soviet Union joined, FIDE has been the main decision making body.
